Zoysia Mowing Height Guide

Mowing height is one of the most underrated factors in Zoysia quality. Cut too high and you get a puffy, thatch-prone lawn. Cut too low without the right equipment and you scalp the crowns. The sweet spot creates the dense, carpet-like turf Zoysia is known for.

The Reality

Zoysia is best maintained at lower heights than most homeowners realize. Its growth habit — tight, horizontal stolons — is what creates that dense carpet feel, and it only expresses that characteristic when mowed at the right height consistently. The wrong mowing height is one of the top reasons Zoysia lawns underperform.

Height by Variety

Zeon Zoysia

• Target height: 0.75–1.5 inches
• Zeon is a fine-textured variety that performs best at lower heights. Can be maintained at 1 inch with a rotary mower; lower heights benefit from a reel mower.

Emerald Zoysia

• Target height: 0.5–1.5 inches
• The finest texture of common Zoysia varieties. Ideally mowed at 1 inch or below with a reel mower. Rotary mowers can work at 1–1.5 inches.

Meyer (Z-52) Zoysia

• Target height: 1–2 inches
• Coarser leaf blade, more tolerant of rotary mower at standard heights. Most forgiving variety for homeowners.

El Toro and Zorro

• Target height: 1–2 inches
• Medium texture, good for rotary mowers. Similar maintenance to Meyer.

Seasonal Height Adjustments

Spring (After Scalp)

• Scalp to 0.75–1 inch at green-up, then mow at your target height going forward.
• Don't raise the height "to help the grass" — this is a common mistake. Stick to your target.

Summer (Peak Season)

• Maintain your target height consistently. Do not let the lawn go more than a week without mowing during peak growth.
• Never remove more than 1/3 of the blade in a single cut. If you missed a week, mow at an intermediate height first, then mow again 3–4 days later to reach target.

Fall (Wind Down)

• Keep your normal height — don't raise it before dormancy.
• Last mow of the season before dormancy at regular height.

Mower Selection

• Rotary mower: Works well for most homeowners at 1–1.5 inches. Ensure blades are sharp — sharp blades are essential for clean cuts on Zoysia's tough blades.
• Reel mower: Required for heights below 1 inch. Delivers a cleaner, more precise cut that enhances density. Premium results but higher investment and maintenance.
• Robotic mowers: Work well with Zoysia at their standard heights. Great for maintaining consistent height without missing mows.

Pro Tips

• Sharp blades matter more than mower type. A sharp rotary blade beats a dull reel mower every time. Sharpen or replace blades at least twice per season.
• Don't mow wet grass. Wet Zoysia clumps, tears unevenly, and clogs your mower. Morning dew is fine; mowing after rain is not.
• Track your mow frequency. During peak growth, Zoysia grows 1–2 inches per week. If you're mowing every 2 weeks, you're always violating the 1/3 rule and creating thatch and scalp cycles.
• Alternate mowing patterns. Mowing the same direction every time creates grain (the grass bends in one direction) and compresses soil over time. Alternate 90 degrees each mow.
